ABOUT ME

Susan Romanelli LCSW specializes in individual, couples and family therapy  and maintains a private practice in Houston, Texas.

Susan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience. She obtained her masters in social work in 1995 at New York University. Susan has worked extensively with personality disorders (specifically borderline and narcissistic), mood disorders, trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, and psychotic disorders. Previous to opening up her private practice in Houston, she was the Program Director of the HOPE Program (an inpatient speciality unit, working with patients primarily with personality disorders, mood disorders, dual-diagnosis as well as family and couples therapy) at the Menninger Clinic, which is considered the premier inpatient hospital both nationally and internationally. In addition to her position as Program Director at the Menninger Clinic, she provided individual therapy on Young Dually-Diagnosed, Professional in Crisis and Eating Disorders units.

Prior to moving to Houston, Susan worked at New York Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains, New York. She worked in various positions: Psychotic Disorders inpatient, day program and outpatient clinics; Anxiety and Depression outpatient clinic; Employee Assistance clinic; as well as the Children in Divorce Program. When she left New York Presbyterian Hospital, she was the Director of the Schizophrenia Disorders Program, which consisted of inpatient, day program and outpatient. Combined these programs provided treatment to up to 350 clients at any given time.

Susan has spoken both locally and nationally on borderline personality disorder, dually-diagnosed young adults, stigma of mental illness (including the National Alliance of Mental Ilness) as well as case conferences in order to educate students and colleagues. She has written articles on borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia and the stigma of mental illness.

Susan is an interactive and caring professional. She works primarily in the psychodynamic treatment modality, which explores at one's own dynamics, their origins and impact on current emotional well-being and functioning. She also integrates Dialectical Behavorial Treatment, especially with clients with the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Although an understanding of a diagnosis is helpful, her therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges.  She  works with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.
